OpenTable behaves differently from Resy, and the difference matters if you are waiting on a table. Most OpenTable restaurants publish a long booking window, often 60 to 90 days, so the far edge of the calendar is rarely the interesting part. What changes hour to hour is the near term: tables inside the next two weeks appearing and vanishing as people cancel and rebook.
That makes OpenTable a cancellation game rather than a drop game. There is usually no dramatic moment when a month of dates appears. Instead a Friday at 7pm that was gone this morning is available for eleven minutes this afternoon, and whoever is looking at that moment gets it.
Because the openings are short-lived and unscheduled, manual checking performs badly. You would have to guess the minute. A tracker inverts that: it watches continuously and tells you when the table exists, which is the only moment the information is worth anything.
